It is the evening before, delivery estimates have gone red, and the shops shut in an hour. The temptation is to send a gift card with a two-word message and hope it reads as generous rather than rushed.

You have more options than that, and several of them are better than what you would have bought with three weeks’ notice. Speed forces you to give something specific instead of something safe.

1. Book something, not send something

Best for: Anyone you can share an afternoon with.

A table at the restaurant they like, two cinema tickets, a court for an hour, a slot at a pottery studio. Booking takes ten minutes and the gift has a date attached, which is more than most wrapped objects manage. Print the confirmation or write it on a card so there is something to hand over.

2. Pay for the thing they are already dreading

Best for: The person with one annoying expense coming up.

A car service, a deep clean, the vet bill, the exam fee. It is unglamorous, and it is the present people remember in March. Say what it covers and transfer the money so it cannot become a favour they have to claim.

3. Something from a shop that is still open

Best for: When you want an object to hand over tomorrow.

A good bakery, a cheesemonger, a wine shop, a garden centre, a hardware shop. The trick is to buy from somewhere with actual expertise and ask the person behind the counter for help — a well-chosen loaf and a jar of something is a better gift than a panic-bought gadget, and it is bought in fifteen minutes.

Check allergies and dietary preferences before you buy anything edible.

4. A digital thing that arrives instantly

Best for: Someone whose hobby lives on a screen.

A game they have been waiting for, a year of the app they use daily, an audiobook credit, a course on the thing they keep mentioning. These land in an inbox in seconds. Send it with a sentence explaining why you chose that specific one; without it, this is a gift card wearing a hat.

5. A promise with a date

Best for: Any relationship where time is the scarce thing.

Babysitting on the 14th. A day of help with the move. Driving them to the airport at five in the morning. Write it on a card with the date already filled in, then put it in your own calendar before you hand it over — an undated promise is a nice thought, a dated one is a gift.

6. Something you make tonight

Best for: People who have known you a long time.

A playlist with a line about each track. Photos printed at the pharmacy machine and put in a cheap frame. The recipe they always ask for, written out by hand. These take an evening and land far better than their cost suggests.

The gift card, done properly

If a gift card is genuinely the right answer, the difference between careless and thoughtful is one sentence. Choose a specific shop rather than a generic card, and write what you want them to get with it: this is for the ridiculous cheese counter, get the one you always look at. You have turned a transfer of money into a recommendation.

Avoid cards for shops they never use, and check the expiry rules — in some places they expire far sooner than people expect.

Next year

The reason this happens is not disorganisation, it is that dates arrive without warning. Put the ones you keep missing somewhere that reminds you first: Giftlify emails you before each date and, if you send the person a form, brings back what they actually want. Free, and it takes about a minute per person.
